Drops

On a road bike, "drops" refers to the lower part of the curved road bike handlebar (drop bar). When riding in drops, you grip the handlebars in the lowest position. This has several advantages:

1. Aerodynamics – The lower stance reduces air resistance and allows for higher speeds.

2. Stability – You have better control over the bike in the drops, especially during fast descents or sprints.

3. Leverage – The brake and gear levers can be operated efficiently in this position, especially when braking hard or climbing while out of the saddle.

Typically, drops are used when speed is important or when conditions require a lower and more stable position. At a relaxed pace or on long rides, many road cyclists prefer to grip the tops of the handlebars ("tops") or the brake levers ("hoods").
