Further information and FAQs about bicycle tires

Die wichtigsten Informationen in unserem FAQ praktisch zusammen gefasst

Tire size is given in inches or according to ETRTO specifications, e.g., 26×2.0 or 50-622. It must match the rim size, as an incorrect tire won't fit the rim and will compromise riding safety. Check the information on your old tire or in your bicycle's owner's manual. Wider tires offer more comfort and grip, while narrower tires roll more easily and are better suited for road bikes. For e-bikes or fat bikes, the maximum load capacity is also important.

Tubeless tires don't require an inner tube because they are mounted directly onto the rim, creating a tight seal. Advantages include lighter weight, reduced rolling resistance, and greater puncture resistance, as small punctures often seal themselves. Traditional tubular tires are easier to mount, less expensive, and compatible with many standard bicycles. Tubeless setups are particularly well-suited for road bikes and mountain bikes, while tubular tires remain versatile enough for everyday use, trekking, and children's bikes.

Tire lifespan depends on the material, usage, terrain, and maintenance. For road bike tires, a mileage of 2,000–5,000 km is normal, while mountain bike tires last 1,500–3,000 km depending on the trails and grip requirements. City or trekking tires can last significantly longer, often 5,000–10,000 km. Regularly checking the tread, tire pressure, and proper storage will extend their lifespan. Visible cracks, worn tread, or frequent punctures are clear indicators that a tire needs replacing.

Regularly checking tire pressure, tread depth, and for any damage is important. Maintain the manufacturer's recommended tire pressure to ensure a comfortable ride, good grip, and puncture resistance. Clean tires of dirt and oil, and store your bicycle away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures whenever possible. If your bicycle will not be used for an extended period, it is advisable to slightly inflate the tires to prevent deformation. Proper care will significantly extend the lifespan of your tires.
