Walk mode: The push assist on e-bikes explained

The walk mode (also known as push assist) is a feature on e-bikes that activates the motor when pushing the bike at a slow speed. Instead of pushing the e-bike – which weighs between 17 and 28 kg depending on the model – without assistance, the motor takes over some of the pushing work. The bike then moves independently at a controlled walking speed, typically a maximum of 6 km/h .

The walk mode is not a driving aid, but is designed exclusively for pushing the bike on foot. The maximum speed of 6 km/h is stipulated in the European e-bike standard EN 15194 – systems that comply with this limit are legally classified as bicycles and do not require insurance or a driver's license.

How does Walk Mode work?

Activation occurs differently depending on the engine system:

Bafang (rear hub motor)

MYVELO's e-folding bikes are equipped with Bafang rear hub motors. The walk mode is activated via the throttle lever on the handlebars: hold the throttle lever down – the motor starts and propels the bike at walking speed. Releasing the lever stops the motor immediately.

Alternatively, the 3-second method also works with all Bafang systems: Press and hold the down button on the control unit for three seconds until walk mode is activated.

Bosch

On Bosch systems, the walk mode is activated via the plus button on the control unit (hold for 3 seconds). The display shows a pedestrian symbol or "WALK". Prerequisite: The function must be configured (activated) in the Bosch system beforehand – without this configuration, the plus button will not activate walk mode.

All current Bosch motors (Active Line, Active Line Plus, Performance Line, Cargo Line) generally feature a walk assist mode. However, activation is crucial: the function must be enabled in the system by the dealer or manufacturer – this is usually the case with a fully configured bike, but is optional with some manufacturers. It's worth inquiring before purchasing if the walk assist function is a key factor in your decision.

Shimano Steps

Dedicated walk button on the control knob, often marked with a foot symbol. Available on Steps E6100 and higher.

In all systems, the walk mode is only active while the button or lever is held . If you release it, the motor stops immediately – this prevents the bike from starting uncontrollably.

The motor assistance in walk mode operates at reduced power – enough to cushion the weight of the bike uphill, but not so much that the bike is ripped out of your hands.

When is walk mode useful?

Steep ramps and steps

Anyone who has to take an e-bike into a parking garage, underground parking lot, or up a steep driveway knows the problem: pushing the bike yourself over 10 meters takes more effort than a complete bike ride. The walk mode compensates for the weight – you guide the bike, the motor provides the assistance.

Train stations and public transport

On the platform, in the subway, or when changing between train and bus: e-bikes often need to be pushed for short distances, sometimes through narrow passages or up inclines. With walk mode, the bike can be steered with one hand.

Particularly relevant for e-bike folding bikes : When folded, the MYVELO Berlin or Zurich can be rolled, but on a station ramp, the walk mode makes carrying it much more comfortable.

campsite and paved paths

Pushing a heavy e-bike on gravel, sand, or grass – typical campsite surfaces – is arduous. The walk mode helps guide the bike safely to its pitch without having to lift or drag it.

Seniors and people with limited strength

For older riders or people with wrist or shoulder problems, the walk mode is not a comfort feature, but a real safety benefit: An e-bike that rolls uncontrollably over a ramp or cannot be stopped on an incline is a real risk of falling.

Walk mode vs. hill start assist

Both functions are related, but different:

Walk mode Starting aid
Purpose Pushing on foot Starting from a standstill
speed max. 6 km/h short impulses up to approximately 6 km/h
activation Hold button Press the button once
Riders on bikes? No Yes

The start assist provides brief support when starting off – for example, at a traffic light on an incline. The walk mode is permanently active as long as the button is pressed and is intended for pushing the bike alongside it.

Is the walk mode available on all e-bikes?

No – and the differences are significant even within a single brand:

Engine system Walk mode Notice
Bafang rear hub motor (MYVELO) Yes Throttle lever or 3-second down button
Bosch Active Line Yes Hold the plus button for 3 seconds; the function must be activated beforehand.
Bosch Active Line Plus Yes Hold the plus button for 3 seconds; the function must be activated beforehand.
Bosch Performance Line / CX Yes Hold the plus button for 3 seconds; the function must be activated beforehand.
Bosch Cargo Line Yes Hold the plus button for 3 seconds; the function must be activated beforehand.
Shimano Steps E5000 / E6100 Yes Walk button on the control knob; availability depends on firmware and region.
Yamaha PW-Series Yes Depending on the display version

Anyone who regularly needs the walk mode – for example, as a commuter on station ramps or an older user – should check the specific motor model of their desired bike, not just the brand.

Conclusion

The walk mode is often only mentioned as a small bullet-point feature in product descriptions – but for many everyday situations, it's one of the most practical functions on an e-bike. Especially when the bike is heavy, the path is steep, or you lack the strength, it makes the difference between tedious carrying and comfortable walking.
