Häufige Fragen about City E-Bike Guide

Die häufigsten Fragen und Antworten

Want to enjoy the many advantages of an e-city bike in the city? Then compare the different types in this article and discover helpful tips. We'll explain how to find the right e-bike model for you, which motor is the best, and why it's worth paying attention to the quality of your e-bike.

The differences between various types of e-city bikes

In everyday language, the term "e-bike" has become common for all types of bicycles with electric drive, but strictly speaking, not every bicycle with an electric drive is also an "e-bike." So what are the differences?

What is a pedelec?

A pedelec is a bicycle with a motor output of up to 250 watts. These bikes also feature an electric assist system, providing pedal assistance up to a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour. With a market share of 95%, pedelecs are the most widely used type of e-bike. Helmets are not required, and no special license is needed. Furthermore, the use of bicycle trailers is permitted, and the bikes may be ridden on bike paths.

What is meant by an S-Pedelec?

An S-Pedelec has a motor output of up to 500 watts and provides pedal assistance up to 45 kilometers per hour. A driver's license is required to operate one. Furthermore, riders must be at least 16 years old, and a helmet is mandatory. In cities, it is not permitted to use standard bike paths, and the use of bicycle trailers is prohibited.

What is meant by an e-bike?

An e-bike can most accurately be described as a two-wheeler with a motor. It's therefore not technically a bicycle, but more like a moped. Consequently, a driver's license is required, the minimum age is 16, and a helmet is mandatory. The difference between an e-bike and an S-Pedelec is that the rider receives assistance when not pedaling. As mentioned earlier, however, the term e-bike is often used synonymously for all pedelecs.

Basically, an e-city bike is powered like a classic bicycle. You simply pedal and off you go. E-bikes are available with many gears and a derailleur system, or with fewer gears and an internal hub gear system, as well as with a coaster brake.

The electric assist system is normally controlled via an additional display mounted on the handlebars. This display shows the current level of electric drive assistance as well as many other helpful details, such as speed, remaining battery range, and calories burned.

The different assistance levels determine the motor's power output and the amount of thrust it adds to your pedaling. Three or five assistance levels are standard. The battery is charged using the included charger and a standard wall outlet, which typically takes between two and eight hours depending on the battery's size and quality. It's important to note that a new battery only reaches its full capacity after several charging cycles. Therefore, it's recommended to fully charge the battery during the first few cycles.

E-bike batteries can be mounted on or integrated into the frame, or even installed in the luggage rack. Integrated batteries are clearly gaining ground. The advantage of these batteries is that they have little impact on handling or the bike's center of gravity. Furthermore, they are protected from external elements and are very discreet.

Several factors influence the range, such as the overall weight of the bicycle, the quality of the motor and battery, and the battery capacity, which is usually around 400 or 500 watt-hours. However, the manufacturer can only provide approximate figures, as external factors like inclines, the selected assistance level, and headwinds also affect the range. As a general rule of thumb, though, the range increases with increasing battery capacity and, consequently, usually also with increasing price.

Do you ride your e-city bike in hilly terrain? Or do you need your e-city bike to perform well on bumpy roads and uneven paths? Then you should take a closer look at the following types. Each variant has its own advantages and offers benefits in different areas. This way, you can choose a model that perfectly suits your needs and your daily commute.

Trekking e-bike

The trekking e-bike is an all-rounder for bike tours and city riding. It's ideal for carrying luggage and suitable for both flat and gently rolling terrain.

Tip: Our Nizza, Milano, and Ibiza trekking e-bikes are perfect for a variety of uses and offer exceptional comfort and safety both in the city and on rougher paths.

Cross e-bike

The cross e-bike is a sporty all-rounder for everyday use and tours, which does not offer the possibility of carrying luggage, but is very well suited for paths off the roads.

Hardtail e-bike:

The hardtail e-bike offers a stable frame, generally very robust and reliable components, making it a dynamic e-mountain bike.

Fully equipped e-bike:

The full-suspension e-bike is suitable for those who want more comfort on uphill sections and more performance on downhill sections. Its fundamental feature is full suspension.

City e-bike

The e-city bike is the classic companion for everyday riding in the city. It typically has road-legal equipment and only a few gears for riding on flat and paved roads.

TipThe myvélo e-bike trekking and e-bike SUV models are true all-rounders, equally at home on the smooth asphalt streets of the city as on uneven forest and field paths. With them, you get a great e-city bike with added comfort on longer journeys.

Tip: Our MYVELO Fatbike electric folding bikes They have extra-wide tires, thus ensuring a safe and comfortable ride.

Also, the Tourmalet racing bike, which is designed for lightness and was developed as a mountain racing bike, is exactly the right model for sporty riders.

E-cargo bike:

The e-cargo bike is the workhorse of e-bikes. It offers a large storage area for luggage and still provides a fun ride.

If you're still unsure which routes you'd actually like to ride with your new bike, and don't want to spend too much money right now, cross e-bikes and hardtail e-bikes are ideal entry-level options. There's a wide selection of models available, and the price level is moderate, as these types of bikes are usually produced and delivered in large quantities.

E-city bikes also feature motors mounted on the front hub, the rear hub, or in the center of the wheel at the bottom bracket. Rear motors are particularly impressive thanks to their direct power transmission to the rear wheel and offer excellent riding dynamics. Nevertheless, due in no small part to Bosch and its market position, mid-drive motors have become somewhat more prevalent in Germany, as they have proven to be durable, quiet, and reliable, with a barely noticeable impact on handling.

E-bikes with front motors are generally less recommended, as they shift the bike's center of gravity forward in a relatively unfavorable way and are usually more prone to malfunctions than the other types mentioned. It's generally advisable to choose a well-known manufacturer. Their components are significantly more robust and powerful. If you need to buy spare parts for your bike, you should also opt for brands from reputable manufacturers. Skimping on quality can lead to malfunctions.

As a rule, it's not advisable to take an old, cheap bicycle and then install an aftermarket motor. Even if this seems attractive at first glance, very few bicycles are actually suitable for conversion, not to mention that safe participation in road traffic is not guaranteed. The calculation of a good, but classic bicycle plus an aftermarket motor plus mechanic's costs also doesn't add up, as it's simply not worth it.

In this case, it is better to opt for a proper e-bike, where the frame and individual components have been specifically designed for the electric motor.

How do I upgrade an e-bike?

It is possible to connect multiple batteries together. This can significantly increase the range in some cases. For example, it is possible to place another battery on a rail above the downtube, thereby doubling the battery capacity from 500 watt-hours to 1000 watt-hours.
