lycra

Lycra is the brand name for a particularly elastic synthetic fiber, also known as elastane (or "spandex" in the USA). It was developed by DuPont in 1958 and is now used in many sports and functional clothing items.

Properties of Lycra

  • Extremely stretchy: Can stretch up to seven times its original length and return to its original shape.
  • Shape-retaining: Lycra clothing does not stretch.
  • Light and smooth: Pleasant on the skin, often barely noticeable.
  • Quick-drying and breathable: Ideal for sporting activities.

Use

  • Sportswear: cycling jerseys, cycling shorts, swimsuits, running clothes, yoga pants, etc.
  • Underwear: For a better fit and comfort.
  • Fashion: In jeans or leggings for more freedom of movement.
  • Compression clothing: Such as support stockings or sports compression clothing.

In cycling, for example, Lycra pants are very popular because they fit tightly, do not wrinkle, and do not restrict freedom of movement – ideal for long tours or races.

🧵 How do you recognize good Lycra clothing?

1. Material composition

  • Lycra (elastane) is almost always mixed with other fibers such as polyamide (nylon) or polyester .
  • The ideal Lycra content is 10-20%, combined with high-quality base materials.
  • More elastane doesn't automatically mean better – it's about the balance between elasticity and support .

2. Seam routing and processing

  • Flat seams or seamless workmanship prevent chafing – especially important for cycling shorts or tight sportswear.
  • Make sure the seams are clean and even, with no loose threads or twisted cuffs.

3. Fit

  • Lycra clothing should fit tightly but not constrict.
  • Good pieces fit snugly without slipping or pinching – like a second skin.
  • When cycling: The shorts should not slip, the jersey should be long enough and not pull up.

4. Rebound force

  • A sign of quality is that the material immediately contracts after stretching without becoming loose.
  • Poorer products lose their tension over time and “sag”.

5. Breathability and moisture management

  • High-quality Lycra fabrics wick sweat away and dry quickly.
  • Important for sports: You stay dry and don’t overheat.

6. UV protection and opacity

  • Many high-quality Lycra fabrics offer UV protection – useful when cycling, jogging or SUPing in the summer.
  • Good Lycra fabrics are also opaque, even when stretched (e.g. in leggings).

7. Brand quality

  • Well-known sports brands such as Castelli, Assos, Rapha, Pearl Izumi, Löffler and Gore Wear rely on high-quality Lycra fabrics.
  • Many no-name products can also be good – but branded products usually offer better wearing comfort and longer durability .

🔍 Buying tip

  • Feel test: The fabric should feel smooth, elastic and “alive” – not limp or plasticky.
  • Try it on: Pay attention to the fit, compression, cuffs and whether the item slips when you move.
  • Customer reviews often help in assessing quality and durability.
