This checklist helps you not to forget anything important.
Many people underestimate how quickly small things can cause big problems. A flat tire without a spare tube, a dead battery, or a lack of water can unnecessarily complicate a tour. A well-structured packing list ensures that you are prepared and can fully concentrate on the riding experience.
These items should be taken on every bike tour :
Multitool for bicycles
Repair kit
tire levers
A minor defect can happen quickly – with this basic equipment, it can usually be fixed immediately.
Tip: When packing your bicycle tire, pay attention to the different valve types. Whether it's a Schrader (car) valve, a Dunlop valve, or a Presta valve, a different pump adapter is required.
Whether it's 20 or 100 kilometers – the body needs replenishment.
Water (at least 0.5–1 liter per hour, depending on intensity)
Electrolyte drinks for longer tours
Energy bar
Fruit (e.g. banana)
Nuts or dried fruit
Sandwiches for longer journeys
A constant energy level ensures that you remain efficient and can enjoy the tour.
The weather can change quickly – especially on longer journeys.
Rain jacket or windbreaker
spare shirt
Cycling gloves
sunglasses
sunscreen
Head covering (during breaks)
The principle is: better to remain flexible than to freeze or overheat.
Orientation is crucial, especially on unfamiliar routes.
Smartphone with navigation
Power bank
charging cable
Popular apps like Komoot or Strava help with route planning and recording the tour.
Often forgotten – but extremely important in an emergency:
ID card
Health insurance card
Cash & debit/credit card
Emergency contacts
Optional:
small first aid kit
Tissues or wet wipes
Those traveling with an e-bike should take additional points into account:
Charged battery
Charger (for longer trips)
Key for the battery
Especially on longer journeys, it is worthwhile to plan charging points in advance.
Here the packing list becomes more extensive:
Change of clothes
hygiene products
Bicycle maps or offline navigation
Lock with higher security level
Possible tool upgrade
Those who travel with a folding bike or e-bike can travel particularly flexibly – for example in combination with train or car.
Distribute weight evenly : panniers instead of a backpack protect your back.
Keep essential items within easy reach : snacks, smartphone, water
Less is more : Pack only the essentials.
A well-thought-out checklist is key to a relaxed bike tour. Having the essentials with you allows you to fully concentrate on what really matters: the riding experience, nature, and the moment.
Whether a short commute or a long weekend tour – with the right preparation, every trip becomes a highlight.
