Why a JobRad calculator is useful

Company bike leasing, known as JobRad, is becoming increasingly popular. Employees and the self-employed benefit from tax advantages and can use high-quality bikes or e-bikes at affordable rates. But how much can you actually save? A JobRad calculator helps you accurately calculate the individual costs and benefits.

Why does the tax class play a role?

Because your individual savings potential with company bike leasing depends heavily on the so-called tax progression. The higher your gross income, the more taxes you pay – and the greater the effect of salary conversion.

The tax bracket determines how much your monthly tax deduction is and how much you actually save by reducing your taxable income.

The savings are particularly noticeable in tax brackets I or IV; in tax brackets V or VI, the effect tends to be smaller. That's why our calculator takes this variable into account: so you can realistically estimate how much you'll actually end up with.

Which bicycles can be used with JobRad?

In principle, you can lease almost any bicycle or e-bike with JobRad – as long as it meets the minimum price of €749 (including VAT). Whether it's a city bike, racing bike, mountain bike, cargo bike, or e-bike with a powerful mid-engine: the selection is vast. S-Pedelecs (up to 45 km/h) are also possible in principle, but are subject to stricter requirements such as mandatory insurance, registration, and helmet wearing.

Even special models like folding bikes (ideal for commuting) or trekking bikes for longer tours can be financed through the JobRad system – whether for commuting or leisure. Tip: You can also commute longer distances to work with an electric SUV.

The only important thing is that the bike must be purchased through a JobRad-certified specialist retailer (such as MYVELO) or an affiliated online platform. You can often co-finance accessories such as locks, lights, luggage racks, or mudguards – this slightly increases the leasing rate but adds additional convenience. Feel free to contact us about leasing and job bikes, and we'll help you set them up with your employer.

How does the JobRad calculator work?

Job bike

The JobRad calculator is based on the following parameters:

  • Gross list price of the bicycle: The new price of the desired model.
  • Lease term: Usually 36 months.
  • Tax class and income: These factors influence savings.
  • Employer subsidy: Some companies cover part of the leasing costs.
  • Use of the bicycle: Private use may have tax implications.

Using these values, the calculator calculates the monthly leasing rates, the tax benefits and the total savings compared to a direct purchase.

Example calculation: JobRad vs. direct purchase

E-bike direct purchase financing

Assume a high-quality e-bike costs €4,000. With a leasing term of 36 months and tax class I, the calculation is as follows:

  • Monthly leasing rate: approx. 100 euros
  • Tax savings through salary conversion: approx. 30 euros
  • Effective cost per month: 70 euros
  • Total costs over 36 months: 2,520 euros
  • Savings compared to direct purchase: 1,480 euros

These savings vary depending on income and employer contributions, which is why the JobRad calculator is a valuable tool.

The savings result from three components: the income tax savings (marginal tax rate × lease payment), the social security savings (approximately 20.5% × lease payment), and the offsetting taxable benefit (0.25% of the list price × marginal tax rate). For an e-bike with a list price of €3,500 and a marginal tax rate of 35%, the monthly payment is reduced from approximately €87 to an effective €42 — a saving of around 52%.

The taxable benefit is the amount you have to declare as income for the private use of a company bicycle. Since 2020, a flat rate of 0.25% of the gross list price per month applies to bicycles and e-bikes (up to 45 km/h). For an e-bike costing €3,500, this amounts to €8.75 per month, which is added to your taxable income. This regulation is valid until at least the end of 2030.

Yes. The majority of the savings come from the salary sacrifice itself—that is, from the tax and social security savings, which are independent of the employer. An employer contribution (e.g., €20–50/month, which some companies pay in addition) further increases the savings, but is not a requirement.

Yes, in most contracts. The takeover price is usually 10–18% of the gross list price. For a bike costing €3,500, that would be €350–€630. If the purchase price is below the market value, the difference can be considered a taxable benefit. Your employer can tax this at a flat rate of 25%.

The lease agreement is between your employer and the leasing company—not between you and the provider. If you change jobs, you have two options: your new employer can take over the contract, or you can purchase the bike directly at its current residual value. Early termination usually incurs costs—the exact terms are outlined in the lease agreement.

All bicycles and e-bikes with a gross list price of €749 or more, purchased through a certified specialist retailer, are eligible. This includes e-city bikes, trekking e-bikes, folding e-bikes (https://myvelo.de/collections/elektro-klappraeder), racing bikes, and cargo bikes. Accessories such as locks, lights, or luggage racks can often be financed directly through many contracts.

JobRad is the best-known provider of company bike leasing in Germany, but not the only one. Eurorad, Lease a Bike, and Deutsche Dienstrad operate on the same tax principles—the difference lies in the terms and conditions, service processing, and contract details. MYVELO works with several leasing providers and will find the right model for you.
