Bosch Hub Line

The Bosch Hub Line is a rear hub motor from Bosch eBike Systems, which is slated for installation in electric bicycles starting in 2027. With the Hub Line, Bosch is expanding its existing motor portfolio – which until now has consisted exclusively of mid-drive motors – to include, for the first time, a hub motor system developed in-house.

How does a hub motor work?

With a hub motor, the electric motor is located directly in the hub of the rear wheel. It transmits the drive power directly to the wheel, without any connection to the pedal mechanism or the chain. The rider's pedaling and the motor assistance are therefore completely independent of each other – a fundamental principle that differs significantly from a mid-drive motor.

Hub motors have been used in a wide variety of e-bikes for years, but system manufacturers like Bosch long considered them less relevant than mid-drive motors. The Bosch Hub Line marks a change of course: Bosch is fully integrating the hub motor concept into its e-bike system ecosystem for the first time.

Bosch Hub Line vs. Bosch Mid-Motor

What are the advantages of the Bosch Hub Line?

  • System integration : The Hub Line communicates via the Bosch eBike Connect standard. Support levels, battery status and range can be controlled via the Bosch app and compatible displays – just like with the familiar mid-drive motors.
  • Compact design : The motor is fully integrated into the rear wheel hub and requires no additional space on the frame. This is particularly beneficial for compact bicycle designs.
  • Reduced chain wear : Because the motor does not engage with the drivetrain, the chain remains unloaded. This significantly reduces wear during daily use.
  • Quiet operation : Hub motors are inherently known for their quiet design. Bosch is likely to further optimize this characteristic through its own development.
  • Low maintenance : Thanks to the direct power transmission and the enclosed engine design, many of the maintenance points that arise with a mid-mounted engine are eliminated.
  • For which e-bikes is the Bosch Hub Line suitable?

The Hub Line is primarily aimed at compact e-bikes used in urban environments. It is particularly suitable for:

    • E-folding bikes : No motor on the frame means no restrictions on the folding mechanism. The drive unit is located where it doesn't affect the folded dimensions.
    • City bikes and everyday commuter e-bikes : For users who want low maintenance and travel short to medium distances daily.
    • E-bikes with belt drive : Since the motor does not drive the chain, it can easily be combined with a belt drive.
    • Availability

The Bosch Hub Line was announced on June 18, 2026, and is expected to be available in e-bikes from 2027. MYVELO is working on an electric folding bike with a Bosch Hub Line drive system.

Running hurts, climbing stairs is agony, and intensive sports are completely out of the question. But most people overlook a form of exercise that orthopedists have been recommending for years: cycling. And with e-bikes, it's even more accessible.
