Gravel bikes have become true all-rounders on the bicycle market in recent years. They combine the sportiness of a road bike with the robustness of a mountain bike and are ideal for anyone who wants to ride on both asphalt and gravel roads. But beginners often ask themselves: Can you get a good, modern gravel bike for under €1000? The answer is: Yes – if you know what to look for.

A gravel bike is characterized by a relaxed geometry, wide tires (usually 35–45 mm), disc brakes, and a sturdy frame. In contrast to a road bike, it offers a more comfortable riding position, better control on uneven terrain, and is suitable for longer tours.
In the under €1000 price range, you're usually looking at entry-level models. Nevertheless, there are some that impress with solid features:
Frame : Mostly aluminum, less often steel. Carbon frames are practically non-existent in this price range.
Gears : Often Shimano Sora or Tiagra (2x9 or 2x10), sometimes Microshift. 1x11 systems are only found occasionally.
Brakes : Mechanical disc brakes are standard, hydraulic brakes are rare in this price range.
Tire clearance : Up to approx. 40 mm possible – sufficient for gravel, forest roads and light trails.
When buying a gravel bike for up to €1000, you should pay particular attention to the following points:
Frame & geometry – does the bike fit your body measurements and riding preferences?
Brakes – mechanical disc brakes require little maintenance, hydraulic brakes offer more braking power but are usually more expensive.
Translation – those who frequently drive off-road benefit from a mountain-suitable translation.
Tires – good all-round tires save on additional investments later.
Retrofitting capability – can the bike be equipped with a luggage rack or mudguards?
Beginners who don't want to go into debt right away will find a bike here that's perfectly suited for weekend rides, commuting, and their first bikepacking trips . Of course, you shouldn't expect miracles in terms of weight, gears, and high-end components. But these modern entry-level models offer excellent value for money and open the door to a new world of cycling.
A modern gravel bike for under €1000 is absolutely achievable – if you pay attention to the right components. For anyone who appreciates versatility and has a thirst for adventure off the beaten track, it's the perfect entry point.

Drinking sounds simple – yet most road cyclists systematically make mistakes when it comes to it. Too little, too infrequently, the wrong things. Even moderate dehydration of 2% of body weight can noticeably reduce endurance performance. For a 75 kg cyclist , that equates to just 1.5 liters – an amount that can be reached faster than you might think on a high-intensity summer ride.
VO2max – maximum oxygen uptake – is the metric used by sports physicians, performance diagnosticians, and now most sports smartwatches to quantify aerobic fitness with a single number. And indeed, it is one of the best predictors of endurance performance: those who can process more oxygen per minute and kilogram of body weight are, in principle, more enduring.
4,800 kilometers. No peloton, no rest stops, no fixed sleep schedule. The Race Across America – RAAM for short – is not a cycling race like any other. It's a battle against time, sleep deprivation, climate zones, and one's own limits of endurance. Those who make it all the way to Annapolis, Maryland, have crossed more than a continent – they have redefined themselves.
