What is the Silk Road Mountain Race?

The Silk Road Mountain Race is an annual ultra-endurance race that was launched in 2018. It stretches approximately 1,900 kilometers through Kyrgyzstan and includes more than 34,000 meters of elevation gain — a challenge that is extreme even for experienced cyclists.

What's special about the route: There's no support. Riders must carry their own equipment, find accommodation, and organize their own food. There are checkpoints, but no signposted route — only GPS data to guide riders.

The route: A journey through wild beauty

Silk Road

The route leads through the majestic Tien Shan Mountains, past high-altitude lakes, yurt villages, and flocks of sheep. The landscape is incomparable, yet equally challenging:

  • Gravel roads and single trails are the order of the day. Asphalt roads? None.
  • High passes like the Kegety Pass take riders to over 3,800 meters above sea level – including oxygen deprivation and extreme weather conditions.
  • Remote villages rarely offer the opportunity to stock up on provisions. Good planning and a strong will are essential.

Requirements: Body and mind in harmony

Winding Road

Anyone signing up for the SRMR should bring more than just good physical fitness. The following skills are essential:

  1. Independence: Without a backup team, improvisational talent is required.
  2. Navigation skills: The route is unmarked – GPS devices and a sense of direction are vital.
  3. Mental strength: Days alone on the bike, extreme weather conditions and physical exhaustion – the mind decides who reaches the goal.

Equipment: What do you need for the SRMR?

Lightweight and robust – that could be the motto for the equipment. Participants often rely on the following essentials:

  • Gravel bikes or bikepacking-optimized MTBs that are suitable for rough trails.
  • Ultralight tent equipment for overnight stays in the great outdoors.
  • Heat and rain protection, as temperature differences of over 30 degrees are possible.
  • Spare parts and tools to fix technical problems on the go.

How do I change a bicycle tube? What do I do if a spoke breaks? How do I change brake pads myself? What is the wear rate of a bicycle chain and cassette sprockets? Where can I get replacement parts? These questions should be clarified before a ride.

For further planning: Which tent is suitable for a trip, how much weight do you want to carry on a mountain bike or gravel bike? What food is essential and how do you prepare it? Camping stoves, rice, and carbohydrates are the basis for good planning.

Why does the SRMR attract so many cyclists?

Comfort zone universe

The Silk Road Mountain Race is more than just a cycling race — it's a transformative experience. Riders learn to step out of their comfort zone, redefine their limits, and find peace in the solitude of nature.

The mix of adventure, challenge and the untamed beauty of Kyrgyzstan makes the SRMR one of the most fascinating cycling races in the world.

Conclusion: Who is the SRMR suitable for?

Just do it!

The Silk Road Mountain Race is not for the faint of heart. It's a race for adventurers willing to push themselves to their physical and mental limits — and beyond. Those who reach the finish line will not only take home a medal, but also an experience that will last a lifetime.
