In this article, we take you on a journey through the history, character and fascination of this special race – and show you why the Strade Bianche has long since achieved cult status.
The name "Strade Bianche" literally means "white roads" – and that's exactly what it means. These unpaved gravel roads wind through the rolling hills of Tuscany, past cypress-lined avenues, vineyards, and medieval villages. The light color of the chalky soil gives the landscape its characteristic look and makes the race more photogenic than almost any other.
In contrast to the historic spring classics in Belgium or northern France, the Strade Bianche is a relatively young race: the modern professional version was only launched in 2007 – and has since rapidly developed into one of the most popular and prestigious one-day races on the calendar.
The Strade Bianche is tough. And that's exactly what makes it so fascinating.
Length & profile: At around 180 kilometers (for the men), it's one of the shorter classics. But the combination of short, vicious climbs, technical descents, and over 60 kilometers of gravel demands everything from the riders.
Weather: In early March, the weather in Tuscany can be unpredictable. Sunshine and dry dust? Possible. Rain and slippery mud? Also possible. Every change in the weather fundamentally changes the race.
Finale: The finish line is in the heart of Siena – on the famous Piazza del Campo . The final meters lead through narrow cobblestone streets and a final steep ramp – a fitting conclusion to an epic race.
Although it is still young, the race has already produced many iconic moments:
Fabian Cancellara dominated the early years, winning three times (2008, 2012, and 2016). His strength on rough terrain made him the epitome of the Strade Bianche rider.
Wout van Aert took the win in 2020, having previously finished third twice. His solo ride through the Tuscan countryside in brutal heat will remain unforgettable.
Tadej Pogačar (2022) demonstrated his class with a long solo over 50 kilometers – and proved that Grand Tour riders can also shine here.
Elisa Longo Borghini, Annemiek van Vleuten and Lotte Kopecky have shaped the women's race – which has also been held since 2015 and is in no way inferior in terms of toughness and excitement.
Many pros call this race one of their absolute favorites. Why?
Variety: It's not just a road race – it's almost a gravel race with a WorldTour feel.
Tactics and technique: Good legs alone aren't enough. Those who want to succeed here need bike control, courage, vision — and sometimes even luck.
Style: The race combines the best of different worlds: the romance of cycling, the beauty of the landscape and the brutality of the terrain.
Do you dream of following in the footsteps of the pros through Tuscany? Good news: Every year, there's an open race, the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche , which takes place on the same weekend as the pro race. You can ride part of the original route – including white roads, steep ramps, and the finish line in Siena.
Tip: A gravel bike or robust road bike with slightly wider tires is a definite advantage here. And those who approach the tour at a relaxed pace will be rewarded with magnificent views, good food, and authentic Italian flair.
The Strade Bianche has earned its place among the classics. It's tough, beautiful, dramatic—and offers everything that makes cycling so special. Whoever wins it has won the hearts of the fans. And anyone who experiences it for themselves will see Tuscany with different eyes.
So why not discover the white streets for yourself?
Whether as a spectator in front of the television or on your own bike – the Strade Bianche is an experience that lasts forever.
A fresh pair of handlebar tape is like a new pair of gloves: It feels grippy, clean, and comfortable. But anyone who's ever tried wrapping road bike handlebar tape themselves knows it's not as simple as it looks. Wrinkles, gaps, or uneven wraps can not only ruin the appearance but also impair riding comfort. In this article, we'll show you the most common mistakes when wrapping handlebar tape—and how to avoid them from the start.
What if you could achieve noticeable progress on your road bike with just a few minutes per week? It sounds too good to be true – but it's scientifically proven. The magic word: all-out training. This form of training is based on extremely short, yet maximally intense bursts of exercise and pushes your body to its limits. In this article, you'll learn what "all-out" really means, how it works, and how you can incorporate it into your road bike training.
Carbohydrates, electrolytes, caffeine, creatine, beta-alanine, beetroot juice, magnesium, omega-3, vitamin D – the list of supplements that supposedly make cyclists faster, more enduring, and healthier is long. But which of these actually provide benefits – and which are a complete waste of money?
