Die wichtigsten Informationen in unserem FAQ praktisch zusammen gefasst
The right choice depends on your bicycle, where you intend to use it, and the risk of theft. For short stops in relatively safe areas, a lightweight chain or cable lock may suffice. For everyday use, city riding, or commuting, folding or U-locks with a medium security rating are recommended, as they offer a good combination of flexibility and theft protection. For expensive bicycles or in busy city centers, robust U-locks or chain locks with a high security rating (depending on the ABUS or ART rating) are advisable. E-bikes and high-quality mountain bikes also benefit from heavy-duty chain or folding locks, as they are more susceptible to theft.
Many manufacturers, such as ABUS, use a Security level scaleThe resistance rating is used to assess the strength of a lock. The higher the rating (e.g., 10 or higher for ABUS), the more difficult it is for thieves to pry the lock open with common tools. A lower rating is suitable for lower risk or short stops, while a higher rating is recommended for expensive bikes or long periods of storage. The rating takes into account material thickness, lock system, and construction, not just length or weight.
Most modern bicycle locks come with Frame mounts or supplied with special clips that allow for easy and vibration-free mounting on the frame. Ensure the mount is secure and firmly attached without obstructing other components. If no mount is available, you can carry the lock in a pannier, backpack, or body bag – make sure it's secured so it doesn't rattle, damage other parts, or interfere with your ride.
To achieve the best possible theft protection, ideally wrap your lock... to attach the frame and at least one wheel to a fixed object (Lantern, bike rack, railing) that cannot be easily moved or pulled out. This makes it more difficult to carry the bike away completely or bypass the lock. Avoid using a single lock on only the front wheel, as this is easier to remove. Additionally, using a lock with a sufficient security rating means that more time and tools are required, which acts as a deterrent.
