Helmets

You can find the right helmet size by measuring your head circumference. Use a tape measure to measure the circumference directly above your eyebrows and around the largest part of the back of your head. Compare this measurement to the helmet's size recommendation (e.g., S, M, L). A well-fitting helmet should fit snugly but not be too tight. The padding and adjustment system (e.g., dial closure) help you adjust the helmet precisely. A helmet that is too large or too small does not offer optimal protection and can slip in the event of a fall.

Everyday or city helmets offer comfort and good all-around visibility for commuters and recreational cyclists. They often have moderate ventilation and may include additional features such as integrated LED rear lights or reflective elements. Mountain bike helmets are usually cut lower at the back of the head to offer more protection during off-road riding and feature adjustable visors to shield against the sun or branches. Road bike helmets are characterized by particularly good ventilation, low weight, and an aerodynamic shape to support comfort and performance during sporty rides.

Safety in Europe is ensured by tested standards such as CE EN1078 or comparable standards are ensured. Every certified helmet offers basic protection. More expensive helmets may have additional benefits such as better ventilation, lighter weight, more comfortable padding, or more modern adjustment systems. Premium helmets sometimes also incorporate advanced impact absorption technologies, but are not necessarily "safer" in terms of the basic standard – however, they can improve comfort and fit, which in turn increases the likelihood of wearing the helmet correctly and consistently.

Store your helmet in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight. Clean the shell with mild water and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals or solvents that could damage the polymer layers. The inner padding is removable and washable on many models. Regularly check the helmet for visible cracks, dents, or warped straps. After a crash, it's advisable to replace the helmet, as even invisible damage can compromise its protective function.
