Measuring chain wear on a bicycle chain: How to keep your e-bike in top shape

Chain wear is an even more significant issue on e-bikes than on traditional bicycles. The powerful motor supports pedal power, placing greater stress on the chain.

Why is chain wear particularly important on e-bikes?

A worn chain leads to inefficient drivetrain, accelerated wear of the cassette and chainrings, and can even break. Therefore, regular wear checks are essential.

How do you recognize a worn chain?

Typical signs of a worn chain are:

  • Jerking or jumping of the chain when pedaling
  • Increased noise in the drive
  • Inaccurate switching operations
  • Visibly elongated chain

To determine whether a chain change is necessary, chain wear is measured using special methods.

Methods for measuring chain wear

Bicycle workshop tools

1. Measurement with a chain gauge

The simplest and most accurate method is a chain gauge. This tool is inserted into the chain links and indicates whether the chain is already worn.

  • Values below 0.5%: chain still in good condition.
  • Values between 0.5% and 0.75%: Change chain soon.
  • Values above 0.75%: Replace the chain immediately to protect the cassette and chainrings.

2. Measurement with a folding rule

If you don’t have a chain gauge, you can also check with a ruler:

  • Place the ruler and measure a distance of 24 links.
  • A new chain measures exactly 30.48 cm (12 inches).
  • If the length is more than 30.7 cm, the chain is worn out.

3. Measurement with a caliper

For more precise results, a caliper can be used to measure the distance between the bolts. A significant increase indicates wear.

How often should you check the chain?

Because e-bike chains are subject to greater stress, wear should be measured more frequently than on regular bikes. We recommend checking every 500 to 1,000 kilometers, depending on riding style and weather conditions.

Change your chain in good time: Longer lifespan for your e-bike

Changing the chain in a timely manner not only prevents excessive wear on the cassette and chainrings, but also maintains the efficiency of the drivetrain. Regularly checking and maintaining your e-bike chain will save you money in the long run and ensure a more pleasant riding experience.
