Safe riding in city traffic: tips and tricks for e-bikers

E-bikes have become an integral part of urban streets. They're fast, quiet, environmentally friendly—and a lot of fun. But city traffic presents a number of challenges: narrow streets, parked cars, inattentive pedestrians, and other road users who often don't expect a speedy e-bike.

To help you navigate the urban jungle safely and relaxed, we have put together the most important tips and tricks for you.

1. Visibility is everything 👀🔦

Especially in the city, you're often overlooked—especially by drivers. Therefore, the following applies:

  • Wear bright or reflective clothing.
  • Use daytime running lights , even when the sun is shining.
  • Additional reflectors on your helmet, backpack or spokes increase your visibility enormously.
  • Make eye contact if possible. This lets you know you've been noticed.

The better you are seen, the safer you are on the road. Wear bright clothing with reflectors or use special cycling jackets with luminous elements. Turn on your lights even during the day – modern LED headlights help you not only see, but also be seen. Additional reflectors on your helmet, tires, or backpack further increase visibility.

2. Know your speed – and brake in time 🛑⚡

An e-bike accelerates faster than many people expect – and you yourself can easily underestimate your speed.

  • Always keep enough distance.
  • Fingertips on the brake – especially in confusing situations.
  • Drive with foresight. A child suddenly runs into the street, a car carelessly opens its door—be prepared.

Tip: Test your brakes regularly – especially in wet conditions.

3. Adjust your riding style: E-bikes are not racing bikes 🏙️

Even if it's tempting, racing through the city center at 25 km/h is not a good idea.

  • Slowly through pedestrian zones or on shared paths.
  • Drive defensively at traffic lights. If you push ahead, you'll quickly find yourself in a truck's blind spot.
  • Stay in your lane and don't weave between cars. You're part of the traffic.

In heavy city traffic, it's important to keep your eyes open and think ahead. Many accidents happen because cyclists or drivers fail to see each other. Especially on an e-bike, you're faster than conventional bikes – and that surprises some road users. Keep your distance from parked cars (keyword: suddenly opening doors) and ride defensively rather than aggressively.

4. Be careful when turning: signaling is not enough 🙋‍♀️➡️

Drivers often only look at other cars – e-bikes get lost in the process.

  • Indicate clearly and in good time that you intend to turn.
  • Look over your shoulder before changing direction.
  • Stay in the middle of the lane when turning. This way you won't be cut off.

Never drive unexpectedly: Hand signals are mandatory before turning. A quick glance over your shoulder before changing lanes can prevent collisions. Eye contact with drivers or pedestrians also helps—this way you'll know if you've been seen.

5. Defensive driving = arrive more relaxed 🧘‍♂️

Stress in traffic is poison – for concentration and safety.

  • Always expect others to make mistakes.
  • Don’t let yourself be rushed or provoked.
  • It's better to drive 5 minutes longer, but without any dangerous situations.

Give preference to well-maintained bike paths, even if they aren't always the shortest route. Apps like Komoot, Bike Citizens, or Google Maps with bike navigation can help you find safe and bike-friendly routes. Avoid busy roads, especially during rush hour.

6. Technical check: Your e-bike needs maintenance 🔧⚙️

Before you set off, you should do a quick technical check. Do the brakes work? Are the lights on – not just in the dark, but also during the day? The battery should be sufficiently charged so you don't suddenly find yourself stranded in the middle of rush hour traffic with a dead bike. Tire pressure, tire tread, and any reflectors should also be checked.

A safe e-bike is a well-maintained e-bike. Regularly check for:

  • Brakes: Check pads and pressure point.
  • Lights: Do the front and rear lights work?
  • Tires: Enough tread and correct pressure?
  • Chain and gears: Clean, oiled, adjusted?

Tip: Have your dealer do a professional check once a year – especially before the dark season.

7. Bonus tip: Use smart helpers 🧠📱

There are great gadgets for more security:

  • Helmets with integrated indicators or brake lights.
  • Rearview mirror for the handlebar end.
  • Apps with route guidance specifically for cyclists who avoid busy roads.

A rearview mirror on the handlebars, smart indicators, a helmet with brake lights – there are numerous little gadgets that can make you safer in city traffic. Apps with traffic information or dashcams for securing evidence in an emergency can also be helpful.

Conclusion: Riding an e-bike in the city can be safe AND relaxing

With a combination of good preparation, forward-thinking driving, and a little love of technology, you'll be well-equipped. Remember: Safety isn't a hindrance, but your ticket to carefree driving fun in the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Stay visible, stay alert – and have fun driving! 🚴‍♀️⚡🛡️
