A crank puller is a special tool needed to remove the crank arms of a bicycle or e-bike from the bottom bracket axle . Because the crank arms are pressed tightly onto the axle, they usually cannot be removed without damage without the right tool. The crank puller ensures that the connection is loosened in a controlled manner and with even pressure.
A crank puller usually consists of two parts:
Outer sleeve with thread: This is screwed into the thread of the crank arm.
Internal bolt (screw spindle): By screwing it in, the bolt presses on the bottom bracket axle and thus pulls the crank arm off the square taper, ISIS or Octalink axle.
It is important that the crank arm has an intact internal thread – otherwise the crank puller cannot grip it.
Here's how to use a crank puller correctly:
Remove pedals (optional, for more space).
Loosen the crank fastening – usually with an Allen key or socket wrench.
Screw in the crank puller – ensure the thread is fully and straight.
Turn the spindle until the crank arm is audibly and noticeably released from the axle.
Remove the tool – the crank can now be removed.
Tip: A drop of multi-purpose grease on the thread makes it easier to loosen later and protects against corrosion.
Crank pullers are available in different designs to fit various axle systems:
Square taper axle
ISIS Drive
Octalink
Combination puller for multiple systems
Special pullers for e-bikes or cranks with integrated locking systems
Some models have interchangeable inserts to allow them to be used flexibly with different crank types.
Removing a crank without a puller often leads to damaged bearings, bent crank arms, or stripped threads . Especially with high-quality e-bikes with powerful motors, you should always use appropriate tools to perform maintenance and repairs professionally.
