Cleats

Cleats are small metal or plastic plates that are attached to the sole of special cycling shoes. They allow the shoes to clip into clipless pedals , thus ensuring a secure connection between the shoe and the pedal.

Features

  • are mounted to the shoe sole with screws

  • Different designs, depending on the pedal system (e.g. SPD, Look, Time, Speedplay)

  • determine the release angle (angle at which the shoe is released from the pedal)

  • Depending on the model, they offer more or less lateral play (so-called "float")

Areas of application

  • Road bike: for maximum power transfer and efficiency

  • Mountain bike (MTB): for secure grip even on rough terrain, often with recessed cleats suitable for walking.

  • Gravel and cyclocross bikes

  • Indoor cycling and spinning

Advantages

  • A secure connection ensures optimal power transmission during pedaling.

  • stable hold even on uneven terrain

  • Different cleat models for individual preferences (e.g., more freedom of movement for knee relief)

  • It increases pedaling efficiency, as pulling movements can also be used.

Disadvantages

  • Only compatible with special cycling shoes

  • It takes some getting used to, as clicking in and out needs to be practiced.

  • Cleats can wear out and need to be replaced regularly.

  • Limited comfort when walking (especially with road bike cleats)

Demarcation

  • Unlike flat pedals or bear trap pedals, cleats always require a clipless pedal system.

  • They are the central connecting element between cycling shoe and pedal.
