From 18 February 2027, the following significant changes will come into force under the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542:
Digital Battery Passport: A digital battery passport will be mandatory for batteries in light transport vehicles (e.g., e-bikes), industrial batteries with a capacity of more than 2 kWh, and electric vehicle batteries. This will contain information about the battery's origin, composition, and repair and recycling processes.
QR code labeling: Batteries must be provided with a QR code that leads to important information such as the CO₂ footprint, technical data and the battery passport.
Interchangeability of portable batteries: Portable batteries must be designed so that consumers can easily remove and replace them themselves. Batteries in light transport vehicles such as e-bikes must be replaceable by an independent specialist.
The EU Battery Regulation, which comes into force in 2027, will make the e-bike industry more sustainable and transparent. In particular, the new interchangeability of batteries could change the design of many e-bike models.
These measures aim to increase the transparency, sustainability and user-friendliness of batteries in the EU.

Do you dream of cycling through the flat polders of the Netherlands, crossing Copenhagen's bicycle bridges, or exploring the Australian coast on your e-bike? Then you should know beforehand: cycling isn't the same everywhere. Every country has its own infrastructure, its own laws – and sometimes even its own unique cycling culture. In this article, we'll take you on a tour around the globe and show you what to expect – including the most important rules for e-bikes and pedelecs.
Strava is the most widely used training and community app for cyclists worldwide. With it, you can record your rides, analyze your performance, compare yourself with others on segments, and track your progress over months and years.
