Flat pedals

Flat pedals are flat bicycle pedals without a clipless mechanism, offering the rider a large, flat contact surface. The shoe rests freely on the pedal, allowing for quick transitions between mounting and dismounting.

Features

  • wide platform made of aluminum, magnesium or plastic

  • often with replaceable pins (small screw pins) for more grip

  • non-slip surface, even when wet and muddy

  • Compatible with all types of shoes, especially with special flat pedal shoes with grippy rubber soles.

Areas of application:

  • Mountain biking (MTB), especially downhill, enduro and trail riding

  • BMX and Dirt Jump

  • Urban and city bikes

  • Trekking and everyday bikes for riders who prefer flexibility

Advantages

  • Immediate foot placement possible – high safety in technical sections

  • great freedom of movement and flexibility

  • Stable stand thanks to wide platform and pins

  • low-maintenance and robust

Disadvantages

  • less efficient power transmission compared to clipless pedals

  • heavier than simple plastic pedals

  • Pins can potentially cause shoes to wear out faster.

Demarcation

  • Unlike bear trap pedals, flat pedals have a more modern design and usually feature replaceable, individually adjustable pins.

  • Compared to clipless pedals, you don't need special cycling shoes with cleats and you are not permanently connected to the pedal.
