Der Hinterradmotor kann die Gangschaltung nicht nutzen und ist deshalb an steilen, langen Anstiegen weniger effizient als ein Mittelmotor. Das Gewicht sitzt hinten-unten, was bei sportlichem Fahren das Handling beeinflussen kann, und der Wechsel des Hinterreifens ist etwas aufwendiger, weil der Motor in der Nabe sitzt. Für den Stadt- und Pendelalltag auf überwiegend flachen Strecken fallen diese Nachteile in der Praxis kaum ins Gewicht.

Das hängt vom Einsatzzweck ab. Für Stadt, Pendeln und flaches Gelände ist der Hinterradmotor meist die bessere Wahl: günstiger, leiser, wartungsärmer. Für viele Höhenmeter, Touren oder ein E-MTB spielt der Mittelmotor seine Stärken aus, weil er die Gangschaltung nutzt und eine zentrale Gewichtsverteilung bietet. Grundsätzlich ja – es gibt Umbausätze, mit denen sich ein herkömmliches Fahrrad auf einen Hinterradnabenmotor umrüsten lässt. In der Praxis ist das aber anspruchsvoll: Rahmen, Ausfallenden, Bremsen und Akkubefestigung müssen passen, und die Straßenzulassung als Pedelec ist nur mit geprüften Komponenten (max. 250 W, Unterstützung bis 25 km/h) gegeben. Für die meisten Fahrer ist ein fertig konfiguriertes E-Bike die zuverlässigere und sicherere Lösung.

Ein Hinterradnabenmotor wiegt je nach Bauart und Leistung typischerweise zwischen 2 und 5 Kilogramm. Getriebenaben sind dabei deutlich leichter als Direktantriebe. Weil der Motor kompakt in der Nabe sitzt, eignet er sich besonders gut für leichte E-Klappräder und Stadträder.

Beide Begriffe meinen dasselbe Antriebskonzept: einen Elektromotor, der das Hinterrad direkt antreibt. „Hinterradmotor" beschreibt das Bauteil (der Motor in der Hinterradnabe), „Hinterradantrieb" das Prinzip (die Kraft wirkt am Hinterrad). Gebräuchlich sind außerdem die Bezeichnungen Hinterradnabenmotor, Heckmotor und Nabenmotor.
