The most important traffic rules for cyclists

Cycling is an environmentally friendly, healthy, and often fast way to travel. To stay safe on the roads, there are clear traffic rules that cyclists should follow. Especially with an e-bike, which allows for higher speeds, it's important to have a thorough understanding of the traffic regulations. Here are the most important rules every cyclist should know.

Drive on the right and use cycle paths

Cyclists must always keep to the right. If a mandatory cycle path is available (marked with a blue cycle path sign), they must use it. Otherwise, they may ride on the road.

Observe right-of-way rules

Cyclists must follow the general right-of-way rules. At intersections with "right-before-left," this rule also applies to cyclists. Anyone crossing from a cycle path onto the roadway must yield to other road users.

Traffic lights also apply to cyclists

Cyclists must obey traffic lights. There are special bicycle traffic lights; if these are missing, regular traffic lights apply. Anyone who ignores a red light risks a fine.

Give hand signals

When turning, it's important to use hand signals to inform other road users. The signal must be given well in advance of changing direction.

Riding in a group

If you are travelling in a group, you should follow the rules: more than two cyclists are not allowed to ride next to each other, unless traffic is not obstructed (e.g. in traffic-calmed areas).

Alcohol limit for cyclists

The blood alcohol limit for cyclists is 1.6 per mille. Above this level, severe fines and even the revocation of a driver's license can be imposed. However, even lower levels can result in a penalty if the driver appears unsafe.

Mobile phone ban

Making phone calls or texting while driving is prohibited unless using a hands-free device. Anyone violating this ban will face a fine.

Lighting requirement

In the dark or when visibility is poor, functioning bicycle lights are mandatory. These include a white headlight, a red rear light, and reflectors on the pedals and wheels.

Give priority to pedestrians

Pedestrians have priority on shared sidewalks and bike paths. Cyclists must ride with particular care and slow down if necessary.

Helmet requirement – yes or no?

There is no helmet requirement in Germany. However, wearing a helmet is strongly recommended, especially when riding fast e-bikes or in city traffic.

Conclusion

Knowing and obeying traffic rules ensures greater safety on the road. Riding responsibly and according to the rules is especially important when riding an e-bike. This not only reduces the risk of accidents but also increases the enjoyment of riding!
