RTF stands for "Radtourenfahrt" (cycling tour ). These are organized, but non-competitive, road bike tours offered by cycling clubs β often under the auspices of the German Cycling Federation (BDR). The goal is not to be the fastest, but to complete a challenging route together or individually. There is no timing, no rankings β only the enjoyment of cycling counts.
RTFs are characterized by several clear features:
β Marked routes : The route is signposted or GPS-supported.
β Various distances : Mostly between 40 and 150 kilometers, often with several options to choose from.
β Refreshment stations : At selected points you will receive water, fruit, energy bars or cake.
β Start time window : You can start flexibly within a specified time period.
β Entry fee : A small amount is charged for organization, usually between 5 and 10 euros.
Often there is a start card on which you can document your participation β especially if you are collecting points in the BDR.
A recreational cycling event (RTF) is suitable for all road cycling enthusiasts β whether beginner or veteran. Since you can choose your own pace, you can ride with like-minded people or stay entirely at your own rhythm. So you don't have to be a pro to participate β but you should be physically capable of completing the chosen route.
Many use RTFs as a training ride , to collect kilometers or simply to get to know new regions.
An RTF offers you numerous advantages:
πΉ Sense of community : You ride with like-minded people and can easily make contacts.
πΉ New routes : RTFs often lead through scenic areas that you would otherwise never have discovered.
πΉ Well organized : Thanks to signage and catering, you are well looked after all around.
πΉ Cost-effective : Compared to commercial events, the entry fee is very fair.
πΉ Motivation : The fixed appointment helps you to train regularly and improve your fitness.
For a relaxed RTF (Recreational Tour), you should have the following with you:
βοΈ A functioning racing bike
βοΈ Helmet (mandatory at almost all events)
βοΈ Water bottles & snacks for on the go
βοΈ A small repair kit (hose, pump, tire levers)
βοΈ Possibly a speedometer or GPS computer for orientation
βοΈ Entry fee in cash (often no card payment possible)
The best thing to do is check the website of the German Cycling Federation (BDR) or your local cycling club . There you'll usually find a recreational cycling (RTF) calendar with all the events in the region. Alternatively, it's worth taking a look at platforms like:
rad-net.de
gpsies.com (or successors like AllTrails or Komoot)
Local club websites
Tip: Arriving early is worthwhile, as popular RTFs can fill up quickly β especially in good weather.
A recreational cycling event (RTF) is the perfect blend of athletic challenge, nature experience, and community . It offers you a structured yet relaxed framework to indulge your passion for road cycling. Whether as a season opener, a fitness test, or simply to ride with others β a recreational cycling event is always an experience.
Give it a try β the next RTF might be waiting right on your doorstep! π΄β¨
