Bear paws

Bear trap pedals are bicycle pedals with an open, usually metallic design and serrated edges or pins that resemble paws. They provide particularly good grip between the shoe sole and the pedal, even in wet, muddy, or rough terrain.

Features

  • robust construction, often made of aluminum or steel

  • wide contact area for the shoe sole

  • Side teeth or screw pins for a secure grip

  • Suitable for normal street shoes and sports shoes

Areas of application

  • Mountain bike (MTB)

  • BMX and Dirt Jump

  • Trekking and touring bikes

  • Everyday bicycles where slip resistance is a priority

Advantages

  • Very good grip without a click system

  • stable and durable

  • quick ascent and descent option

  • especially suitable for technically demanding journeys

Disadvantages

  • higher weight compared to plastic pedals

  • Slipping can cause injuries to the shin

  • less comfortable on very long road journeys

Demarcation

  • Compared to modern flat pedals, classic bear trap pedals are often simpler in design and have rigid teeth instead of replaceable pins.

  • Unlike clipless pedals, no special cycling shoe binding is required.
