A bicycle spoke is a thin metal rod that connects the bicycle rim to the wheel hub. Spokes play a crucial role in the stability, strength, and elasticity of the wheel. They distribute the forces acting on the wheel evenly and ensure that it retains its shape even under stress.
Structure and function of a spoke:
- Material: Mostly made of stainless steel, sometimes also of aluminum or carbon.
- Design: Attached to the hub straight or with a curved head.
- Fastening: Spokes are fixed to the rim with nipples (small threaded sleeves), which allows their tension to be adjusted.
