Schrader valve (car valve)

The car valve , also known as a Schrader valve , is one of the most commonly used valves in the bicycle sector – especially on city bikes, trekking bikes, and many e-bikes. It owes its name to its identical design to valves used in cars.

The Schrader valve is named after the American company Schrader. Founded in the 19th century by August Schrader, the company developed valves for the emerging automotive industry.

Structure and Function

The Schrader valve consists of a robust valve body with an internal valve pin. This pin is held closed by spring pressure and only opens during inflation or under targeted pressure. This makes the valve particularly robust and less susceptible to contamination.

Advantages of the car valve

  • Easy to use: No unscrewing required – simply inflate directly

  • High compatibility: Works with almost any air pump and at gas stations.

  • Robustness: Resistant to dirt and mechanical stress

  • Disadvantages

    • Limited air pressure: Less suitable for very high pressures (e.g., racing bike tires).

    • Larger valve hole required: Not ideal for narrow rims

    • Typical areas of application

The car valve is primarily found on:

      • everyday bicycles

      • E-bikes

      • Mountain bikes (partially)

The Schrader valve is the perfect choice for anyone who values comfort and ease of use . It particularly shines in everyday use thanks to its uncomplicated operation – ideal for commuters and occasional drivers.
