Quick release

A quick-release skewer is a practical locking mechanism on bicycles that allows wheels or seatposts to be attached and detached without tools . The system consists of an axle with a lever, a clamping nut, and an eccentric clamping mechanism that generates high clamping force when the lever is flipped.

How it works

The quick-release mechanism works on a simple lever principle:

  • Open the lever → The clamping force is released, the component can be removed or adjusted.

  • Close the lever → The eccentric tightens the axle securely, ensuring a firm hold.

The Quick Release allows for quick removal of the wheel, for example in the event of a flat tire or for transport , without the need for tools such as Allen keys or wrenches.

Areas of application

Quick-release fasteners are primarily found on:

  • Front and rear wheel axles of classic trekking, MTB and racing bikes

  • Seatposts for quick height adjustment

  • Entry-level and mid-range bikes that prioritize comfort over maximum stiffness

In contrast, many modern MTBs and e-bikes increasingly use thru-axles , which offer greater stiffness and safety – especially for disc brakes.

Advantages

  • Very quick operation without tools

  • Easy installation and removal of wheels

  • Lightweight

  • Practical for travel or small repairs on the go.

Disadvantages

  • Less torsional stiffness than thru-axles

  • If the tension is incorrectly set, the wheel can slip.

  • Not ideal for very high forces (e.g. downhill or heavy e-bikes)

Safety instructions

A quick-release fastener must be closed firmly – so that noticeable resistance is felt. The lever must not point outwards to prevent unintentional opening, e.g., by branches or other obstacles.
