A steering damper, also known as a steering damping system or simply damper, is a component on bicycles that serves to improve the stability of the steering. This part is often used on mountain bikes , dirt bikes or motorcycles.
The steering damper usually consists of a cylinder filled with oil or a similar damping fluid. It is mounted on the frame of the bike or on the fork and connected to the steering device. Its main function is to absorb unwanted vibrations, shocks or sudden steering movements that can arise from uneven terrain or rapid changes in direction.
By dampening or softening these movements, the steering damper helps to improve control of the bike, especially on difficult terrain or at high speeds. It helps to make steering smoother and more stable and can also help to reduce the risk of fatigue or injury from excessive steering forces.
