EU Battery Regulation

From 18 February 2027, the following significant changes will come into force under the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542:

  • Digital Battery Passport: A digital battery passport will be mandatory for batteries in light transport vehicles (e.g., e-bikes), industrial batteries with a capacity of more than 2 kWh, and electric vehicle batteries. This will contain information about the battery's origin, composition, and repair and recycling processes.

  • QR code labeling: Batteries must be provided with a QR code that leads to important information such as the CO₂ footprint, technical data and the battery passport.

  • Interchangeability of portable batteries: Portable batteries must be designed so that consumers can easily remove and replace them themselves. Batteries in light transport vehicles such as e-bikes must be replaceable by an independent specialist.

The EU Battery Regulation, which comes into force in 2027, will make the e-bike industry more sustainable and transparent. In particular, the new interchangeability of batteries could change the design of many e-bike models.

These measures aim to increase the transparency, sustainability and user-friendliness of batteries in the EU.
