Derailleur gears

What is a derailleur?

A derailleur is a system that allows a cyclist to regulate the relationship between power and speed. This system consists of a chain placed between different sprockets on the crank and cassettes on the rear wheel. When the chain is moved to a larger sprocket on the crank and a smaller sprocket on the cassette, the power required to move forward increases and the speed decreases.

Conversely, if the chain is moved to smaller sprockets on the crank and larger sprockets on the cassette, the speed increases and the power decreases.

What is the difference to other gear shifts?

The biggest difference between a derailleur and other gear systems is the way the gears are selected. Derailleur systems use a chain that runs over a chainring to change gears. Other gear systems use a system of pinions and wheels that are connected together to change gears. Derailleur systems are a popular choice because they are easier to use and offer a wider range of gears. They are also easier to maintain and have a longer lifespan.

Advantages of a derailleur

  • A derailleur is usually very reliable and can last a long time if properly maintained.
  • If a derailleur becomes damaged, it is easy to replace the chain or individual part without replacing the entire derailleur
  • Derailleur gears enable precise gear shifting because they provide a direct connection between the motor and the wheel shaft.
  • Compared to other types of gears, derailleur gears are easier to install and maintain.
  • Derailleur gears are more cost-effective than other types of gears.

Disadvantages of a derailleur

  • Requires regular oiling and cleaning to extend life.
  • A derailleur can still wear out even if it is maintained.
  • It can be noisy if not adjusted correctly.
