spoke magnet

A spoke magnet is a small component that is attached to the spoke of a bicycle and is primarily used in combination with bicycle computers or e-bike displays to measure speed and cadence .

How it works

The spoke magnet works according to the magnetic principle :

  • It is attached to a spoke near the wheel hub.

  • A sensor, usually mounted on the fork or rear stays, detects the passing magnetic field.

  • Each passage of the magnet triggers a signal that the bicycle computer converts into speed, distance or cadence .

This system was particularly common in classic bicycle computers and simple e-bike systems before wireless sensors became common.

Areas of application

  • Bicycle computer : For accurate recording of speed, distance and ride time

  • E-bike systems: For determining wheel speed for motor control

  • Training: For precise measurement of cadence on training bikes

Advantages

  • Simple and reliable: Mechanical magnets are robust and require little maintenance.

  • Affordable: Cost-effective solution for bicycle computers and sensors

  • Easy installation: Can be attached to spokes without special tools.

Disadvantages

  • Mechanical wear: The magnet or sensor can come loose if improperly installed.

  • Accuracy depends on sensor position: Incorrect alignment can lead to measurement errors.

  • Visually noticeable: Not as inconspicuous as integrated sensors

Safety instructions

  • Spoke magnets should be firmly attached to prevent them from slipping or falling off during the ride.

  • The sensor and magnet must be correctly aligned to ensure reliable readings.
