Espresso & road cycling – Why the little black coffee is a great passion

Anyone who regularly rides a road bike knows the ritual: after a long ride or before a tough interval training session, there's no getting around an espresso. Whether in the Italian bar along the route, in the market square after Sunday training, or at home from an espresso machine – espresso is an integral part of road cycling culture. But what's behind this connection between caffeine, style, and performance?

Espresso & racing bike: A cultural symbiosis

Road cycling and espresso – it's more than just a drink and a sport. It's a way of life. Especially in Italy, the birthplace of both passions, espresso is considered an integral part of every bike tour.

Even the professionals of the 1950s and 60s swore by their quick caffeine boost before the start. Espresso was light, invigorating, and could be enjoyed in a café along the track – without a long stay. Today, it's a symbol of style, focus, and passion.

Many road cyclists associate espresso with a kind of mindfulness ritual : The moment before taking the first sip is short, focused and enjoyable – just like a perfect climb or a clean corner.

Why road cyclists love espresso

There are good reasons why so many road cyclists prefer espresso:

  1. Quick energy boost:
An espresso contains about 60–80 mg of caffeine – enough to increase alertness and concentration without putting a strain on the stomach.

  2. Light and gentle on the stomach:
Unlike milk coffee or energy drinks, espresso contains hardly any calories and no lactose. This is a real advantage before or during a workout.

  3. Social aspect:
A shared espresso stop is an integral part of every ride. It strengthens team spirit, provides an opportunity for conversation, and is a small moment of enjoyment that rounds off the tour.

  4. Ritual and routine:
Many riders swear by their “pre-ride espresso” – a kind of starting signal for body and mind that marks the transition from everyday life to training mode.

The effect of caffeine on performance and focus

Caffeine is one of the best-researched natural ergogenics – that is, performance-enhancing substances. Studies show:

  • Increased endurance: Caffeine mobilizes fatty acids from energy stores, allowing the muscles to work efficiently for longer.

  • Improved focus: The central nervous system is activated, which improves attention and reaction speed – ideal for long or technically demanding rides.

  • Reduced pain perception: Caffeine can reduce the subjective feeling of exertion – so you “feel” less exhausted.

It's no wonder, then, that many professionals rely on caffeine – whether in the form of espresso, gels or capsules.

Health benefits of coffee

Besides increasing performance, coffee also has health benefits when consumed in moderation:

  • Antioxidant effect: Coffee contains polyphenols that fight free radicals and reduce inflammatory processes.

  • Cardiovascular protection: Studies suggest that moderate coffee consumption (2-3 cups daily) may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

  • Longevity: Regular coffee consumption is associated with a lower mortality rate – presumably due to the combination of antioxidants, metabolic stimulation and mental activation.

  • Metabolism boost: Caffeine increases thermogenesis, i.e., heat production in the body, and can therefore support fat burning.

Espresso as part of road cycling culture

Espresso in the mountains

Although caffeine can also be consumed in powder or gel form , espresso remains something special. It represents enjoyment, culture, and community – values deeply rooted in cycling.

An espresso break in a small café, the click of cleats on the stone floor, the clinking of cups – these are all moments that bring cycling to life. Espresso is not just fuel, but a symbol of mindful experience.

More than just caffeine

In road cycling, espresso is far more than just a drink. It's a ritual of concentration , a moment of enjoyment , and a part of one's identity .
Whether for performance enhancement, regeneration or simply as a social meeting place – the little black one has long since secured its place in the world of road cycling.

So next time you take a break during a tour, you can say with a clear conscience: "An espresso, please – for the heart, for the legs, and for your zest for life." ☕🚴

Less time, more effect: What intense cycling training really brings

Many people still believe that long, moderate workouts are the key to good health.
