The correct frame size is one of the most important factors for comfort, efficiency and riding pleasure on a bike or e-bike. Those who get it wrong not only risk back pain or numb hands – power transmission also suffers noticeably. The good news: you can determine the optimal size yourself relatively easily. The key to this is your inseam length.

In this article, you will learn step-by-step how to correctly measure your inseam and derive the perfect frame size from it.
Many people only consider body height when buying a bike. However, this is too imprecise, as two people of the same height can have completely different leg lengths.
Inseam is crucial because it:
determines seat height
influences frame height
affects pedaling efficiency
prevents poor posture and discomfort
In short: Those who know their inseam ride better.
You only need a few things for this:
a book or a spirit level
a tape measure or ruler
a wall
Stand barefoot against a wall
Keep your back straight, feet about shoulder-width apart.
Place a book between your legs
Push the book upwards until it simulates a saddle. Apply some pressure.
Hold the position
Important: The book should be level – ideally, check with a spirit level.
Measure the height
Now measure the distance from the floor to the top edge of the book.
👉 The result is your inseam in centimeters.
Tip: For the most accurate result, it's best to measure 2-3 times and take the average.
There are different rules of thumb depending on the type of bicycle:
Frame size (cm) = Inseam × 0.665
Frame size (cm) = Inseam × 0.226
(or in inches: × 0.57)
Frame size (cm) = Inseam × 0.66
Let's assume the inseam is 80 cm:
Road bike: 80 × 0.665 = 53.2 cm
Trekking/E-bike: 80 × 0.66 = 52.8 cm
Mountain bike: 80 × 0.226 = 18 inches
👉 In practice, you would therefore choose a frame of about 52–54 cm.
The optimal frame size depends not only on the inseam but also on the intended use:
Road bike: rather sporty, a slightly larger frame is possible
Mountain bike: more compact for greater control off-road
E-bike: comfort-oriented, often a slightly shorter geometry
Especially with e-bikes, the frame shape (low-step vs. diamond frame) is also an important factor.
Even though it sounds simple, small mistakes often happen here:
❌ Wearing shoes
❌ Not pulling the book up firmly enough
❌ Standing crookedly
❌ Measuring alone (less accurate)
These inaccuracies can quickly make a difference of several centimeters – and you'll notice that when riding.
Inseam not only helps with frame selection but also with optimal seat height:
Rule of thumb: Seat height = Inseam × 0.885
This achieves an almost optimal leg angle when pedaling.
Even with perfect calculation: 👉 Frame size is only a guideline.
Because modern bikes – especially e-bikes – differ greatly in:
Geometry
Reach and Stack
Seating position
Measuring your inseam takes less than five minutes – but it can make the difference between an uncomfortable and a perfectly fitting bike.
Those who take the time benefit from:
more comfort
better power transmission
less discomfort
more riding fun
👉 Therefore: Don't guess – measure.
