aerodynamics

Aerodynamics is the study of the flow behavior of air – in cycling, it is specifically about minimizing air resistance while riding in order to progress faster and more efficiently .

Why is aerodynamics important?

From around 25 km/h, air resistance is the biggest braking factor in road cycling – even ahead of rolling resistance or weight. The faster you go, the more energy you have to expend to overcome air resistance.

👉 Example:
At 40 km/h, up to 90% of the power expended can be needed just to overcome air resistance!

What influences aerodynamics?

Aerotuck

1. Driver position

  • The greatest resistance comes from the body itself.

  • A flat, compact position on the bike (“aero position”) reduces the surface area of contact.

2. Frame and components

  • Aero frames have flattened tube shapes and internally routed cables.

  • Wheels with high rims (“Aero Wheels”) improve the flow.

  • Integrated cockpits , aero seatposts and smooth transitions also help.

3. Clothing

  • Tight-fitting racing jerseys , aero helmets and special overshoes can significantly reduce air resistance.

  • Wrinkles, fluttering fabrics or open zippers cost valuable watts.

4. Accessories

  • Bottle holders, frame bags or lamps influence the air flow – clever placement saves energy.

Measured value: CdA value

The CdA value (drag coefficient × frontal area) indicates how “streamlined” a combination of rider and bike is.
→ The smaller the CdA value, the better the aerodynamics.

What exactly does better aerodynamics bring?

Just 20 watts less air resistance can make a difference of several minutes over 100 km at 40 km/h.
This is crucial – whether in a time trial, triathlon or when chasing a Strava KOM.

Wind tunnel & CFD

High-end products are developed in wind tunnels or with computer simulations (CFD) to achieve minimal improvements in airflow.

For whom is aerodynamics particularly relevant?

  • Road cyclists who want to travel fast and efficiently

  • Triathletes where every second counts

  • Gravel or all-road riders who rely on aero frames for speed

  • Commuters who want to save energy with aero helmets or balance bikes

Conclusion

Aerodynamics is the key to more speed without increasing performance. Those who consciously invest in aero components, clothing, or riding position will noticeably benefit on long distances – whether in competition or in everyday life.
