cadence

Cadence refers to the pedaling frequency of a cyclist, i.e., how many times a cyclist completes a full rotation of the pedals per minute. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm). A high cadence means that the pedals are moved quickly but with comparatively little force; a low cadence, on the other hand, is associated with greater force being used while pedaling more slowly.

Many experienced cyclists aim for an optimal cadence between 80 and 100 rpm, as this protects the musculoskeletal system, allows muscles to work more efficiently, and improves endurance performance. However, the correct cadence depends on training status, the terrain (e.g., incline), the type of bike ( road bike, mountain bike, e-bike), and personal preference.

Some modern bike computers or e-bike displays show the current cadence in real time – it is an important parameter in training and for improving efficiency on the bike.
