rebound

Rebound is a term from suspension technology and refers to the damping effect of a suspension during rebound. In road bikes, it is used particularly on gravel bikes, mountain bikes, and suspension seatposts — in other words, wherever suspension components are installed.

What does rebound mean?

The rebound damping controls how quickly a spring – e.g. in a suspension fork or seat post – expands again after compression.

  • Rebound stage too fast = The wheel “jumps” back and loses contact with the ground.

  • Rebound stage too slow = The chassis “sticks” to the ground and does not rebound in time.

Difference to the pressure stage

  • Compression stage: Damping during compression (e.g. in the event of an impact or puncture).

  • Rebound: Damping during rebound (after impact).

Both levels significantly influence driving behavior, comfort and control – especially off-road.

What is the rebound stage needed for?

The correct adjustment of the rebound ensures:

  • Continuous ground contact (important for grip and safety)

  • Comfort during impacts and bumps

  • Controlled rebound of the suspension

Where can you find the rebound stage?

A typical feature is a small dial with "+" and "−" or a turtle symbol (slower) and a rabbit symbol (faster).

Setting tip:

  1. Adjust your bike to your weight and riding style.

  2. Drive over a known bump.

  3. Pay attention to how quickly the suspension returns.

  4. Adjust in small steps: Better a little slower than too fast!

Who is this relevant for?

  • Gravel fans who ride on rough terrain

  • Bikepackers seeking comfort and control

  • MTB riders for whom suspension tuning is crucial

  • Commuters who rely on suspension seat posts

Conclusion

Rebound is a key element of suspension tuning. Setting it correctly will benefit from increased control, comfort, and safety – whether on the trail, in everyday riding, or while bikepacking.
