Current (amperes)

Current , measured in amperes (A) , describes how much electric charge flows through a conductor per second. It is one of the central quantities in electrical engineering and also plays a crucial role in e-bikes .

What does ampere mean?

One ampere corresponds to the flow of a certain amount of electric charge per second. Put simply:
The higher the current, the more electrical energy is transported simultaneously.

Importance of current strength in e-bikes

The current intensity directly affects e-bikes:

  • the engine's power output

  • the load on the battery

  • the heating of cables and electronics

During strong acceleration, on inclines, or in turbo mode, the current increases significantly. This explains why the battery discharges faster under high load.

Relationship with voltage and power

The current always interacts with the voltage (volts):

  • Power (watts) = Voltage (volts) × Current (amperes)

An e-bike motor with 250 watts can provide this power either via high voltage and low current or vice versa – depending on the system design.

Why is this important?

A consistently high current intensity can:

  • put more strain on the battery

  • increase wear and tear on electronics

  • reduce the range

Modern e-bike systems therefore constantly monitor the current to ensure efficiency and safety.
