efficiency

Efficiency describes how efficiently energy is converted. It indicates what proportion of the energy input is actually available as usable power .

Definition of efficiency

Efficiency is expressed as a ratio:

Efficiency = Useful energy ÷ Energy input

It is usually expressed as a percentage. An efficiency of 90% means that 90% of the energy is used – 10% is lost as heat or friction.

Efficiency of e-bikes

For e-bikes, efficiency primarily concerns:

  • the electric motor

  • the power electronics

  • the powertrain

A high efficiency ensures that as much energy as possible from the battery is actually converted into propulsion.

Impact on range and driving experience

An efficient engine:

  • increases the range per battery charge

  • reduces heat loss

  • ensures a smooth, natural driving experience

Therefore, modern mid-engines are often particularly efficient, as they can operate in the optimal speed range.

Why efficiency fluctuates

The efficiency is not constant. It changes depending on:

  • Support level

  • speed

  • gradient

  • Cadence

Efficiency decreases at very low or very high loads, while it is highest in the medium range.

Importance for the purchase decision

High efficiency does not automatically mean more power, but:

  • better energy utilization

  • lower battery drain

  • longer component lifespan

Especially with touring and everyday e-bikes, efficiency is a crucial quality factor.
