The standing pedal stroke , or "standing pedal stroke," is a cycling technique where the rider stands up from the saddle and pedals while standing. This involves actively using body weight to generate more power at the cranks . The standing pedal stroke is primarily used for steep climbs , sprints , or short bursts of increased power .

When pedaling out of the saddle, you rhythmically shift your body weight from side to side. The bicycle moves slightly from side to side, while your upper body, arms, and legs actively participate. Compared to sitting, this results in:
a higher maximum power transmission
a lower cadence
a higher energy consumption
Biomechanically, in addition to the leg muscles , the trunk, arm and shoulder muscles are also more strongly involved.
The standing pedaling technique is typically used in the following situations:
Steep inclines where not enough torque can be generated while seated.
Sprints or attacks in road cycling
Short bursts of power , e.g. for overtaking or accelerating
Relief of the sitting muscles to prevent pressure points.
In mountain biking, standing on the pedals is also used to better overcome technical sections or root carpets .
High power output over short distances
More control at low cadence and high resistance
Activation of additional muscle groups
Varying the load , especially on long climbs
Despite its advantages, standing pedaling is less efficient than riding while seated:
Higher energy consumption
Faster fatigue
The pulse rate increases more significantly with longer duration.
Increased rear wheel spin is possible on loose surfaces.
Therefore, the standing pedaling position is usually only used for short periods .
Standing up to pedal is also relevant when riding an e-bike . The motor assistance can help you tackle very steep ramps or hill starts . However, some motors are more sensitive to changes in torque and cadence when standing up to pedal, which can lead to a less stable ride .
| feature | Standing on the pedals | Sit |
|---|---|---|
| Power | very high | moderate |
| Efficiency | less | higher |
| Energy consumption | high | lower |
| Length of time | short | long |
| Muscle strain | Full body | primarily legs |
Standing up to pedal is an effective but energy-intensive riding technique used to generate a short burst of extra power. When applied correctly, it improves climbing ability , sprinting power , and adds variety to the training load . However, for efficient and endurance cycling , sitting remains the dominant position , with standing up serving as a powerful supplementary tool.

Family outings with e-bikes are a fantastic way to spend time together in nature – completely stress-free and with plenty of exercise. But especially with younger children, long tours can quickly become a challenge. This is where a towing system for bicycles comes in: It makes cycling together not only easier, but also safer and more comfortable.
