Bosch is one of the leading manufacturers of e-bike drive systems. Since the introduction of the first motor in 2010, the system has been continuously developed – with each generation, performance, efficiency, and riding experience have been improved. Today, the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 (BDU38) with 100 Nm of torque is considered the benchmark in the e-bike world. But how did this come about? A look at the development of Bosch motors reveals why the current generation is so powerful.

With the first generation, Bosch launched the Active Line and Performance Line in 2010. These motors were designed for everyday use and leisure activities – quiet, reliable and with moderate torque (approx. 50–60 Nm).
They laid the foundation for success: precise pedal power support, an intuitive riding experience, and the modular system of battery, motor, and display.
Features of the first generation:
Mid-engine concept
Torque: approx. 50–60 Nm
Assistance up to 25 km/h (pedelec)
Early on, still without e-MTB mode
These motors were ideal for city and trekking e-bikes, but still had potential for optimization in terms of weight, noise level and power output.
With the second generation, Bosch introduced an improved motor control system. The Performance Line CX system came into play for the first time – developed specifically for sporty e-bikes and e-MTBs.
Important new features:
Significantly higher torque (up to 75 Nm)
Improved sensors for more sensitive support
Smaller design and more efficient power transmission
This established the Bosch CX motor as the benchmark in the sporty segment. Riders benefited from natural pedal assistance – especially on steep climbs and technically demanding terrain.
The third generation focused primarily on comfort. The new Active Line Plus motor offered smooth, barely audible assistance. The internal gearing was also revised, resulting in less resistance above 25 km/h.
Highlights:
Compact, lightweight engine
Reduced pedaling resistance
Ideal for touring and city e-bikes
While the CX series became sportier, Bosch focused here on pleasant driving dynamics for commuters and touring cyclists.
The Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 4 (BDU37) marked a major technological leap. With 85 Nm of torque and a significantly more compact housing, the motor weighed around 25% less than its predecessor.
New features:
85 Nm torque
Dynamic eMTB mode with progressive support
Reduced internal resistance
Compatible with the new PowerTube batteries
The motor reacted faster and more precisely, offering a very natural riding feel. The CX Gen 4 quickly established itself as the benchmark, especially for e-MTBs and high-end trekking bikes.

With the fifth generation , the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 (BDU38) , Bosch is launching its most powerful mid-drive motor to date.
It delivers up to 100 Nm of torque , operates extremely quietly and reacts lightning-fast to every pedal movement.
Technical highlights of Gen 5:
100 Nm torque
Maximum efficiency through optimized sensor technology
Improved heat dissipation for long uphill drives
Seamless integration into the frame design
Compatible with Bosch Smart System (Connectivity, E-Bike Flow App, eShift, ABS, etc.)
The motor reacts intuitively, offers powerful support in eMTB and turbo modes, and impresses with its smooth running.
For ambitious drivers seeking maximum performance and control, the Gen 5 is currently the benchmark.
In about 15 years, the Bosch motor has evolved from a simple auxiliary drive to an intelligent, networked high-performance system.
With the Performance Line CX Gen 5 (BDU38), Bosch reaches a new dimension in terms of efficiency, torque and integration.
Whether in an e-mountain bike, trekking bike or SUV e-bike – this motor delivers the power you can feel in everyday life and off-road.
