The bicycle chain is the heart of your bike. It transfers the power from your legs to the road or trail. A clean chain not only runs quieter and smoother, but also increases the lifespan of the chain, sprockets , and chainrings.

The frequency of cleaning depends on riding conditions. In dry conditions, it's sufficient to clean and re-lubricate the chain approximately every 300–500 km. Those who frequently ride off-road, in the rain, or in winter should clean the chain more often – about every 100–200 km. A noisy or grinding chain is a good indicator: this means that dirt or insufficient lubrication is impairing performance.
Care includes:
✅ Cleaning: Wipe away dirt regularly with a dry cloth. For heavy soiling, clean with chain cleaner or a special cleaning device.
✅ Lubrication: Apply a suitable chain oil after every cleaning – use thinner oils in dry conditions, and thicker or wax-based lubricants in wet conditions.
✅ Remove excess oil: A lightly oiled cloth helps to avoid unnecessary dirt build-up.
A neglected chain leads to:
🔴 Increased wear and tear: Dirt and sand act like sandpaper, causing faster wear and tear on the chain, cassette, and chainrings.
🔴 Poorer performance: A dirty chain runs more slowly, leading to power loss and inefficient pedaling.
🔴 Increased noise level: Squeaking, creaking, and rattling are typical signs of a poorly maintained chain.
🔴 Corrosion: Especially in wet or salty roads, rust can form, which drastically reduces the lifespan.
Regular maintenance not only saves money on spare parts, but also ensures a more pleasant driving experience!
There are different methods, depending on the degree of contamination:
✅ Dry cleaning: For light soiling, simply wipe the chain with a clean cloth.
✅ Damp cleaning: For moderate soiling, a brush or chain cleaner with degreaser will do the trick. Rinse with water after cleaning and let it dry thoroughly.
✅ Deep cleaning: Heavily soiled chains can be cleaned with a chain cleaning device or by soaking them in degreaser (e.g., special bio-chain cleaners). Afterwards, dry thoroughly and re-lubricate.
