rim

The rim is an essential component of a bicycle wheel. It forms the outer ring of the wheel, onto which the tire is mounted. The rim is connected to the hub via spokes and provides the necessary stability, load-bearing capacity, and concentricity of the wheel.

Types of rims

  1. Hollow-wall rims – Stronger and lighter, ideal for road bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes.
  2. Single-wall rims – Simple construction, usually cheaper, but less stable.
  3. Disc brake rims – No special braking surface, as the braking force comes from the brake disc.
  4. Rim brake rims – With special braking surfaces for V-brakes or racing bike brakes.

Materials

  • Aluminum – Lightweight, strong and corrosion-resistant.
  • Carbon – Ultralight and aerodynamic, but more expensive.
  • Steel – Robust, but heavier and prone to rust.

Important factors when choosing

  • Rim width (matching the tire)
  • Rim diameter (e.g. 26", 27.5", 28", 29")
  • Number of holes for the spokes
  • Brake compatibility
